Q: How do the XLS downlights work?
The downlights are powered by 120VAC 50/60Hz and are fully on without a dimming control connected.
The dimming control can be our ECL-53-CR, or a commercial 0-10V control in conjunction with our XLIM box.
These downlight fixtures cannot be dimmed by incandescent lighting dimmers or fan speed controls.
Both the 120VAC and the dimming control signal must be filtered before entering the MRI shielded room.
The ECL-53-CR dimmer may be used in the MRI shield room due to its special waveform and shielding.
However, locating it in the shield room may not be possible with some newer highly sensitive open-bore magnets.

Q: Why is there a reset switch on the AC hot line of the wiring diagram for the XLS downlights?
Inside the XLS there is an internal over temperature protection / shutdown circuit that latches when tripped.
The only way to unlatch the shutdown circuit is to drop power to the downlight and then restore it.
Turning the XLS downlight "off" with the dimmer does not reset the unit.
This is why we have the “reset switch” on the wiring diagram.
Of course, this reset switch could also just be a dedicated circuit breaker.
However, the in house personnel may be adverse to throwing breakers.
Q: One of my XLS downlights will not turn on, but the rest of them are on.
Begin by cycling the reset switch on the AC hot line to the string of downlights.
If the particular XLS is still dark, then unplug the dim control cable(s) at the control box on top of that fixture.
If the XLS does not come on, and the AC wiring looks okay, then the fixture is likely defective.
If the XLS does come on at full brightness without the dim control cable plugged in then try replacing the RLD-36 dim control cable(s).
The last thing to try is to move the RLD-37 cable coming from the RLD-65 box, to the problem fixture and see if dimming control is established.
For this step, make sure that the RLD-37 cable is the only one plugged in to the fixture.
If the fixture does not light, then remove it from the ceiling and take it to a bench outside of the MRI room.
Connect 120VAC to the fixture and see if it is lit, if not contact your distributor for a replacement.
Q: One of my XLS downlight fixtures flickers, or does not dim completely.
That fixture is likely defective but try unplugging and plugging the dim control cables a few times.
Try swapping or replacing the RLD-36 dim control cable from the previous downlight.
Try cycling the AC line reset switch.
Q: All of my XLS downlight fixtures flicker or do not dim completly.
This is likely a connection issue, a bad signal filter, or lack of soldering.
You need to solder your DIM A and DIM B leads onto the input lugs of the signal filter.
Then check the wire nut connections in the RLD-65 box.
Try replacing the RLD-37 cable going to the first XLS downlight.
As a last resort, try bypassing the signal filter, if that is possible.
