Q: Why do I need filters and fuse boxes?
Due to the low level of signals received from an MRI scan, any power or control signal entering the MRI room must be filtered.
The MedLux devices utilize 24VDC, 48VDC, or 120VAC, so why would DC power need to be filtered?
The 24VDC and 48VDC power supplies that are used for MedLux are 600W switching power supplies.
This can result in a tiny amount of high frequency noise, which is why we enter the MRI room through a facility filter.
We also use a facility filter for the 120VAC that is fed to MedLux downlights as the building power may have noise riding on it.

In the case of the 24VDC and 48VDC power, we also have a fuse and distribution box mounted on the MRI side of the facility filter.
The 600W of DC power must be limited to UL Class II regulations before distribution to MedLux lighting fixtures.
This allows the use of simple plenum rated cables to wire up the fixtures.

The dimming and RGB color control signals are low level signals, but they too must be filtered as they are PWM and can generate noise.
We chose PWM for MedLux equipment as it can be distributed longer distances with better integrity than 0-10V analog control.

Q: Why are there two different types of MedLux fuse boxes?
Downlights do not have a fuse box as they run from distributed 120VAC and the dimming control signal daisy-chains from one fixture to the next.

The MedLux GPI fixtures are monochrome, dimmed, and run from 48VDC.
Their fuse box has a three connection terminal block: Common, +48V, Dim.
To comply with UL Class II, the fuses are 1.6A slo-blo.

The MedLux Cove and CCT fixtures are RGB, color selected, and run from 24VDC.
Their fuse box has a seven connection terminal block: V+, Common, White, Red, Ground, Green, Blue.
To comply with UL Class II, the fuses are 4.0A slo-blo.

In both fuse box types, the fuses are pushed into two pin connectors.
So if you need a spare, look for an unused terminal block and borrow the fuse physically closest to it.
